Why Donate to the Avenorpedo Scholarship Fund?

Bridging the Gap

While education in Ghana is publicly funded through High School, college and technical schools necessary for better jobs are not. Many qualified students are unable to pay tuition and those that can often do so by burdening their family with the cost. Other students who could qualify become demotivated or drop out of High School because they know they could not afford it.

Local Support

Our organization has had a personal relationship with the community members of Avenorpedo since 2016. We've worked together with local leaders to create a targeted and sustainable scholarship program that has full community support. Students applicants are vetted and nominated by trusted local leaders before they become eligible for a scholarship.

Traceable Funds

Scholarship amounts are based on actual tuition and room/board bills. When possible, payments are made directly to the school and not to intermediaries. This means you'll know exactly what your donation is for and be confident that it gets used for its intended purpose.

Capacity Building

We believe that capacity building is the single best way to help people in developing economies. Instead of giving money, resources or foreigner-led training, supporting the existing in-country mechanisms that promote capacity building, such as Ghanaian-led education, will help create sustainable growth in local communities.

Personal Connection

When you sponsor a student, you are making a direct impact on a real person. Our sponsorship profile pages are designed so you can get to know the students on a deeper level and understand their personal interests and ambitions. And once you sponsor a student, we'll send you updates on their progress so you can find out exactly how your donation helped that student achieve their goals.

Direct Impact

When you sponsor a student, we guarantee that at least 80% of your donation goes directly to paying their tuition and room and board. The remainder will be used for small administration expenses, such as wire transfer fees, local transportation, and unadvertised costs often charged by the Ghanaian college. We are a small, lean, locally-focused NGO with very little overhead, which enables us to use your donation to directly benefit the student your sponsoring.
